Best place to hang out on Kangaroo Island: Kangaroo Island Brewery

Happy Fourth of July! On this day meant for being outside and having beers and BBQ, I want to tell you about my favorite place to chill on Kangaroo Island, Australia. How I wish I was there in summer again!

Kangaroo Island Brewery is the best place to chill and have a beer on Kangaroo Island. With choice craft beers and comfy digs, there’s no where else I wanted to be after a long day of sightseeing. This was one of my favorite things to do on Kangaroo Island.

What to do, what to do

When I first got to the island, I was on the verge of panicking that I wouldn’t be able to get around the island to see anything or do anything because I was alone and car-less.

Enter Susi.

Susi was the person to introduce me to this place, and also the person who invited me on a day of sightseeing. She owned the hostel in Kingscote where I was staying, and had just moved to the island a few weeks prior. She and her partner bought the property as a place to semi-retire.

On one of my first afternoons on the island, she asked me if I wanted to join her at the brewery, and of course I said yes!

Kangaroo Island Brewery

The Kangaroo Island Brewery was started in 2014 by a couple living on the island, Mike and Nina. This is not their day job, but their labor of love. This makes the whole experience even more worthwhile, as you get to talk with them about their lives and what motivated them to start the brewery.

With a tagline of “Hand built beer,” you also get the feeling that everything about this brewery is hand built.

Craft beer at it’s best

The first time I went to the KI Brewery, I had a flight of 4 different beers they had on tap.

My favorite by far was the amber ale, and on subsequent visits number two and three, I only got that beer.

I never got to see the place when it was really packed, but I’m kinda glad that I didn’t. I liked it when it was mostly empty. It felt like the entire place existed solely for us, and for this purpose.

When to go to the Kangaroo Island Brewery

The best way to find out if the brewery is open is by checking their Facebook page or on the calendar page of their website. During the summer season (late December through March), they are usually open 11 AM to 7 PM on Friday through Sunday. They may open on weekdays when the weather is really nice too.

For food options, the last time I went there was a fish and chips truck parked outside. They also have a modest food menu of snacks.

How I got to Kangaroo Island

I asked some fellow travel bloggers where I should go in Australia, and someone recommended Kangaroo Island. It’s a beautiful island to the south of Adelaide in South Australia.

The ferry is a little pricey, and only one company operates between the island and the mainland so they have a monopoly. Flying in is also an option, but just as pricey or more. Make sure you book your spot on the ferry ahead of time (especially if you are taking your car).

I’m putting together a travel guide for planning a trip to Kangaroo Island, so look out for that in the coming weeks! It’ll also include more details about things to do on Kangaroo Island!

Happy chilling!

Whether or not you are celebrating this holiday, I hope that you are enjoying your summer (or winter if you are in the Southern Hemisphere!). Places like this remind me the value of not having any plans, and taking the time to kick back and enjoy the view and company.

Kangaroo Island Brewery is an awesome chill hangout space for a beer lover. Check it out if you are around!
